What happens when two iconic worlds collide? What unfolds when a clever bookworm meets a humble dreamer and they face the same tests of heart and mind? Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar recently answered these questions with its cultural programme, The Mind Factory. An original adaptation, The Mind Factory, brought together Roald Dahl’s two classic characters – Matilda Wormwood (from Matilda) and Charlie Bucket (from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) – on one stage and in one universe of wonder.
Held at Kalamandir, the programme was graced by dignitaries, including Chief Guest Prashant Raj Shukla, Additional DM; Guests of Honour Prasenjit Roy, G.M. of Admission Tree, and Dola Mitra, Editor, Features at The Statesman. The presence of parents, along with educationists, principals, and directors of other institutes, added significance to the event. The day began with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony.

This was followed by the school choir commemorating 150 years of the composition of Vande Mataram. Principal Sonali Sarkar then highlighted the school’s vision in her address. This paved the way for the Chief Guest’s insightful speech. “I really feel honoured to attend the event. It gave me an opportunity to see a sample of the students’ talent in the form of The Mind Factory,” he said, adding, “In a factory, things depreciate. But the mind doesn’t. The more you use it, the more productive it becomes. Academics are important, but co-curricular activities are essential for the holistic development of a child.”

Then came the heart of the programme: The Mind Factory, conceptualised, scripted, and choreographed by Shriek of Silence and performed by over 500 students. The story opens in a classroom, where Ms. Trunchbull reigns with rigid rules and fear. In the classroom, bright, bold, and book-loving Matilda finds herself alongside Charlie Bucket, the quiet boy who believes in wonders beyond his surroundings.
Their destinies merge when Willy Wonka returns with a secretive factory tour for five children. However, this time, he is searching not for fame-seekers or gluttons, but for children who can look beyond the obvious. Together with Augustus Gloop, Mike Teevee, and Sophie, Matilda and Charlie step into a factory that tests not their greed, but their hearts and minds. In room after room, the flaws of ego, vanity, and hollow success are exposed. What remains are kindness, insight, and quiet rebellion championed by Matilda and Charlie. Through their actions, they help Wonka rediscover his lost purpose. They reopen the factory not as a fortress of candy, but as a symbolic ‘Mind Factory’, a beacon of thought and wonder.
At the end of the event, Principal Sarkar emphasised that the production carried a powerful message, “Through Matilda and Charlie, we want to tell that children should be allowed to dream, and we should always inculcate the feeling that they should believe in themselves. This was the message that we want to spread across everyone.”
She further highlighted the role of recreational activities, “Co-curricular activities are really important. They must always go hand in hand with academics. It is because together they contribute to the overall well-being and holistic development of students, something which our school always aims for.
Blending the Broadway tunes with original soundscapes and a bold new narrative, the production celebrated Dahl’s humour and belief in children’s innate wisdom. As the day concluded, the message to the children was clear: not to chase the obvious, but to dare to ask ‘why?’ and ‘what if?’. The Mind Factory emerged as a musical that celebrates children who read, imagine, and lead with love.
